Buyer Guide — Hotel Towel Specification

What GSM Should You Choose for Hotel Towels?

There is no single best GSM for hotel towels. Choose a GSM range by property tier and laundry process, then validate it with a sample and a wash test — because two towels at the same GSM can perform very differently.

GSM (grams per square metre) measures towel weight, not quality. It is a useful starting point for a specification, but it should never be the only line in one.

Starting Points by Property Type

One published buyer’s guide from a US towel supplier lists roughly 400–500 GSM for budget or high-turnover properties, 500–650 GSM for standard and boutique hotels, and 650+ GSM for spa-level luxury. Treat these as starting points to specify and test, not as rules.

Property typeCommonly specified rangeWhat to weigh
Budget / high turnover~400–500 GSMQuick drying, laundry cost, replacement cycle
Standard / boutique hotel~500–650 GSMHand feel versus durability and drying time
Spa / luxury650+ GSMPlush feel, weight, freight cost per piece

400 vs 600 GSM: What Actually Changes

A heavier towel usually feels denser and more luxurious, but it also dries more slowly in the laundry, costs more fibre per piece and weighs more in a container, so fewer pieces fit in the same freight cost. A lighter towel dries faster and ships more cheaply but can feel thin to guests. The right answer depends on the property’s guest expectations and its laundry capacity.

Why Two Towels With the Same GSM Perform Differently

01

Yarn Quality

Fibre length and yarn type affect softness, absorbency and how the towel ages.

02

Twist

Yarn twist changes hand feel and how well the pile holds up in the wash.

03

Pile Construction

Loop height and density decide how plush the towel feels at the same weight.

04

Weave & Hems

Ground weave density and hem construction affect durability under heavy laundering.

05

Dyeing & Finishing

Colour process and finishing affect colourfastness, softness and shrinkage.

06

Wash Performance

Only a wash test shows how a given construction behaves in your laundry.

How to Decide: Specify, Sample, Wash-Test

Write a GSM range (not a single number) into the specification alongside size, yarn, construction and colour. Approve a sample against the range, then wash it using your real process. The sample approval checklist and the RFQ checklist cover the other fields. Cotelle works across a 300–700 GSM range, and the actual GSM is confirmed against an approved sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single best GSM. Published buyer guides commonly cite roughly 400-500 GSM for budget or high-turnover properties, 500-650 GSM for standard and boutique hotels, and 650+ GSM for spa-level luxury, but the right range depends on your guests, laundry process and budget.
No. Higher GSM means a heavier, denser towel, but it can dry more slowly, cost more and weigh more in freight. Yarn quality, construction and finishing also decide how a towel performs.
A 600 GSM towel is heavier and usually feels plusher than a 400 GSM towel, while a 400 GSM towel dries faster and ships lighter. Which suits you depends on the property tier and laundry capacity.
Cotelle supplies bulk towels across a 300-700 GSM range, with the exact GSM confirmed against an approved sample before bulk production.
Weigh a measured sample and calculate weight per square metre, or ask the supplier for the test method used. Always compare the result with the agreed range and wash-test the sample.
