Discuss Your Hotel Towel Programme

Hotel Quality Is a Specification, Not a Marketing Phrase

"Hotel quality" can mean very different things from one supplier to another. For procurement purposes, the phrase is only useful when it is translated into measurable specifications. A hotel towel should be evaluated against its GSM, fibre composition, yarn construction, dimensions, construction, colour, absorbency, shrinkage, laundering performance, finishing and approved sample.

GSM Guide

What GSM Should Hotel Towels Be?

GSM means grams per square metre. It is one of the most important specifications in towel procurement because it affects the towel's weight, hand-feel, absorbency, drying behaviour and material consumption. Higher GSM generally creates a heavier, more substantial towel, but higher GSM does not automatically mean better quality. Fibre, yarn construction, pile density, finishing and laundering performance also influence the final product.

GSMGeneral PositioningConsiderations
300–400LightweightFaster drying, lighter handling
400–500Light-midweightUseful for high-turnover applications
500–600Mid-heavyBalance of weight, absorbency and practicality
600–700Heavy / plushMore substantial feel, higher drying/laundry load
These are general sourcing ranges, not mandatory hotel standards. The appropriate GSM depends on towel type, property positioning, laundry operation, climate and guest expectations. Current industry buying guides commonly place hotel bath towels around the 400 to 700 GSM spectrum, but the exact range varies by hotel tier and application.

Is 600 GSM Better Than 500 GSM?

Not necessarily. A 600 GSM towel contains more fabric weight per square metre and will generally feel heavier and more substantial. But that doesn't automatically make it the better commercial choice. A 500 GSM towel may dry faster and be easier to process in a high-turnover laundry environment, while a well-constructed 600 GSM towel may be preferred where guest perception and plushness are more important.

The correct question is not "What's the highest GSM?" It is "What GSM delivers the right balance of guest experience, durability, laundry performance and cost for this property?"
Hotel Towel Size Guide

What Size Should a Hotel Towel Be?

There is no single universal hotel towel size. Markets, hotel groups and individual properties can use different dimensions. Treat the dimensions below as reference starting points, not fixed industry standards.

ProductReference Dimensions
Face / Washcloth~30 × 30 cm
Hand Towel~40 × 70 cm / 50 × 90 cm
Bath Towel~70 × 140 cm
Bath Sheet~90 × 150 cm+
Pool TowelCustom
Spa TowelCustom
Gym TowelCustom
Current hotel towel buying guides commonly reference approximately 70 × 140 cm for bath towels and 90 × 150 cm for bath sheets, while also noting that market specifications vary.
Need a non-standard hotel towel size? Send us your dimensions.

What Cotton & Yarn Should Hotel Towels Use?

Fibre and yarn construction influence softness, strength, absorbency, linting, appearance and how a towel performs through repeated laundering.

ConstructionWhat It Can Offer
Combed CottonSmoother, more consistent fibre selection
Ring-Spun CottonSoftness and strength characteristics
Low-Twist / Zero-TwistSoft hand-feel and absorbency characteristics
Cotton BlendsCan be considered where cost, drying and durability requirements justify a blend
Important: Cotelle does not recommend selecting yarn solely because of its name. The final construction should be evaluated against the hotel's performance requirements and approved sample.
RFQ Foundation

What Should Be on a Hotel Towel Specification Sheet?

A good hotel towel RFQ should allow two suppliers to quote the same product. If your specification simply says "premium 100% cotton hotel towel," suppliers may interpret the requirement differently. Use measurable specifications wherever possible.

Hotel Towels Have to Survive the Laundry Room

A towel can feel exceptional on day one and still be a poor hotel towel if it loses its shape, colour, absorbency or surface quality after repeated commercial laundering. Hotel procurement should therefore evaluate the towel under the conditions in which it will actually operate.

Shrinkage

How much does the towel change dimension after laundering?

Colourfastness

Does the colour remain stable through washing?

Pile Retention

Do loops remain secure and consistent?

Absorbency

Does the towel continue to perform after laundering?

Hems

Do the edges remain secure?

Surface Feel

Does the towel become excessively rough?

Linting

Does it shed excessively?

Key principle: Evaluate the washed towel, not just the fresh sample.
Sampling

How Should You Test a Hotel Towel Before a Bulk Order?

1

Approve the Physical Sample

Record GSM, dimensions, colour, construction, branding and finish.

2

Launder the Sample

Where practical, use the hotel's intended commercial laundering conditions.

3

Measure Dimensional Change

Compare before/after measurements.

4

Evaluate GSM

Confirm the agreed measurement basis and testing method.

5

Inspect the Pile

Look for loose loops, pulled loops, flattening and excessive linting.

6

Inspect Hems

Check stitching, loose threads, edge stability and consistency.

7

Evaluate Colour

Check for fading, bleeding and shade change.

8

Evaluate Absorbency & Hand-Feel

Don't rely solely on first-touch softness.

9

Compare Against the Approved Control Sample

The approved sample should become the reference for bulk production.

10

Document Acceptance Criteria

Record the final specification before production begins.

Hotel procurement guidance strongly emphasizes physical samples and measurable acceptance criteria before committing to bulk supply.

Choosing Towels by Hotel Positioning

Use this as a decision framework, not a rigid industry rule.

PropertyStarting Consideration
Economy / Limited ServiceLower-to-mid GSM, drying efficiency, durability
MidscaleBalanced GSM, comfort and operational efficiency
UpscaleHigher hand-feel, absorbency, presentation
LuxuryPlushness, fibre/yarn quality, finish and guest experience
ResortBath + pool requirements, drying and repeated use
SpaSoftness, absorbency and comfort
GymHandling, drying and repeated use
Hotel category alone should not determine GSM. Laundry capacity, climate, occupancy, guest expectations and replacement strategy should also influence the specification.

How Many Towels Does a Hotel Need?

The required quantity depends on room count, occupancy, towel-per-room policy, laundry turnaround and reserve stock. A common planning approach is to maintain multiple sets so that towels can be in guest use, in laundry and in reserve, but the correct par level should be established with the property's housekeeping and laundry operation.

Required Inventory = Rooms × Towels per Room × Required Par Level

Example: 100 rooms × 2 bath towels × 3 par = 600 bath towels, plus any additional operational reserve required by the property.

This is a planning formula, not a universal hotel standard.

Don't Compare Hotel Towels by Unit Price Alone

A cheaper towel is not necessarily the cheaper towel to operate. Procurement should consider the towel's expected service life, replacement rate, laundering requirements and purchase cost.

Cost Per Use ≈ Purchase Cost ÷ Useful Service Uses

Then consider: replacement frequency, laundry costs, drying requirements, shrinkage, damage/rejection, replacement stock, guest complaints and inventory losses.

Key message: The lowest unit price can produce the highest lifecycle cost. This lifecycle perspective is increasingly emphasized in hospitality towel procurement content.

Can Hotel Towels Carry Our Logo?

Yes. Hotel towel programmes can be developed with branding requirements such as embroidery, woven labels and other approved branding treatments. Procurement should specify logo artwork, position, dimensions, thread/colour requirements, label requirements and the approval process.

Hotel Towel Packaging & Packing

Packaging should be specified according to the way the towels will be received, stored, distributed and used. Options can include bulk packing, individual packing, branded packaging, private-label packaging, custom folding, carton marking and retail-ready packaging where required.

Your RFQ should specify units per carton, packaging material, carton markings, barcode requirements, shipping labels and destination requirements.

Do not publish fixed carton quantities until Cotelle confirms them.

Hotel Towel Certifications & Compliance

Certification requirements vary by hotel group, destination and procurement programme. If your hotel or buying house has mandatory certification, testing or compliance requirements, include them in your RFQ. Cotelle will confirm availability and applicability against the selected manufacturing partner.

Procurement FAQ

Hotel Towel Procurement FAQs

There is no universal hotel GSM. A practical starting range is often around 450 to 650 GSM for many hospitality applications, with lighter or heavier specifications selected according to the towel type and property's operational requirements. Higher GSM is not automatically better.
Yes. 500 GSM can be an appropriate starting point for many hotel towel programmes where the buyer wants a balance between substantial hand-feel, absorbency and drying efficiency.
Not automatically. 600 GSM is heavier and generally more substantial, but 500 GSM may be more operationally efficient depending on the property's laundry requirements.
Approximately 70 by 140 cm is a common reference size, but hotel specifications vary by market and property. Final dimensions should always be confirmed in the approved specification.
A bath sheet is a larger-format towel, commonly around 90 by 150 cm or larger, providing greater coverage than a standard bath towel.
Many hospitality programmes use cotton towels, but the appropriate fibre composition depends on the property's requirements, budget, laundry operation and performance objectives.
Combed cotton can provide a smoother and more consistent yarn, but it should be evaluated alongside GSM, yarn construction, pile, finishing and laundering performance.
Ring-spun refers to a yarn-spinning method. It can provide useful softness and strength characteristics, depending on the overall construction.
Zero-twist or low-twist constructions can produce a soft, absorbent hand-feel, although the final performance depends on the complete towel construction.
No. GSM measures weight per square metre. It is important, but it does not independently determine quality.
Check GSM, dimensions, fibre and construction, colour, absorbency, surface feel, pile, hems and performance after laundering.
Yes. A washed sample provides more useful information about how the towel may perform after laundering than a brand-new sample alone.
Shrinkage is the dimensional change that occurs during laundering or finishing. The acceptable amount should be defined in the product specification.
GSM tolerance defines the acceptable variation around the agreed target GSM. The tolerance should be agreed before production.
Yes. Custom dimensions can be coordinated against the buyer's approved specification.
Yes. Branding options can include embroidery and labels, subject to the approved design and production specification.
Yes. Cotelle can coordinate private-label programmes covering product specification, branding and packaging.
